Keeping The Mosquitoes Away

Mosquitoes are a long-standing problem for Malaysians and are responsible for transmitting diseases such as dengue fever or the zika virus.

Here are some things you can do to keep your family safe from these flying menaces.

  • Clear out standing water: Ensure that there are no standing or stagnant water around. Anything that can collect water like toys, garbage, open cans or bottle caps can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If you have a swimming pool, make sure it is properly chlorinated and that the filter working as mosquitoes do not breed where there is water flow or movement.
  • Make natural repellents: Some plants naturally keep mosquitoes away but they usually don’t release such chemicals until they are cut or broken. Plants like citronella, rosemary, lavender, catnip and marigolds are great natural repellents. Try chopping them up and putting them into small dishes around your home.
  • Repeatedly apply repellent: A lotion or spray (preferably one that is environmentally-friendly) is highly recommended as a way to dissuade mosquitoes from biting you and your family members. Lemon oil, lavender or eucalyptus are great choices. Depending on the formulation, your repellent's effectiveness will wear out after a few hours, so do remember to apply your repellent at intervals especially on children.
  • Cover/clean your feet: Mosquitoes are attracted to sweat & bacteria, and toes can be juicy targets.
  • Change the way you dress: Try to opt for light-weight and light-coloured clothes that also hide your arms & legs. Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colours like black or navy blue.
  • Avoid eating outdoors: Mosquitoes are typically active at night. Do note that mosquitoes that are carriers for the Zika virus are more active in the day. Staying indoors would be the best way to avoid getting bitten.
  • Spray insecticide the day before an event: If you are having an outdoor event, spraying insecticide at the event space at least 24 hours prior to your event is highly recommended.
  • Use a mosquito net: If spraying insecticide is not to your taste, setting up a screen or net at an outdoor area is also possible. The use of a mosquito net would avoid situations such as accidental spraying of insecticide on food stuffs. Netting would also keep out other insects like bees or flies.
