Mosquitoes

November 22, 2013

Mosquitoes are an important group of arthropods that feed on human & animal blood. There are about 3,100 mosquito species worldwide. In tropical countries such as ours, Aedes mosquitoes are a vector for dengue fever hence the need to exterminate and manage the mosquito population in our country.

Biology & Behaviour

Different species of mosquitoes lay their eggs in a variety of water sources; ranging from small containers to vast expanses of marshland. On top of that female mosquitoes also require a blood meal in order to lay eggs.

The larval stage is always aquatic and shuttles from the surface to the subsurface where it filters feeds on micro-organisms. It then returns to the surface to obtain oxygen through a snorkel-like breathing apparatus.

The pupal stage does not feed but unlike most insect pupae is extremely active.

The adult emerges from the pupal case using air pressure and assumes a terrestrial existence.

Control Methods

Source Reduction & Environmental Management In order to achieve a long-term solution to mosquito problems, source reduction & environmental management methods are recommended.

Source reduction can be achieved by getting rid of unwanted containers and covering areas where water can pool.

Biological Control  Biological control can be briefly defined as the use of biological agents for the control of pests.
Chemical Control For the control of adult mosquitoes include the following methods:

  • Thermal Fogging
  • ULV and Misting
  •  Larviciding
  • AedesTech Mosquito Home (A-HMS)
  • MozzTech Mosquito Trap
Physical Barriers & Personal Protection Physical barriers include the following methods:

  • Installing netting on premises
  • Repellents

These two methods should be incorporated as part of the overall strategy in mosquito control.

Ridpest Mosquito Control Solutions

Thermal Fogging

For the control of adult mosquitoes, the use of chemical insecticidal adulticide in the form of space spray formulations is required. Distribution of these insecticides can be via thermal fogging. Such activities need to be routinely carried out in order to prevent and control dengue fever outbreaks.

ULV Misting Treatment

The Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Misting utilises water droplets mixed with pesticide to treat mosquitoes and flying insects. It is effective to treat a large area where the insecticide reaches the interior of the plants and the underside of leaves.

Environmentally-friendly formulations named Ridmozzie are used in misting. RidMozzie uses its formulation to bind plants with pesticide. Once it’s sprayed on plants, it will spread and cover the plant surfaces (leafs and branches) and make it lethal for mosquitoes once they come in contact with it. The formulation is water and weather resistant and it lasts up to 28 days. This means that the pesticide’s active ingredients are not washed away by rain therefore retains its strength over longer periods with less pesticide used.

Larviciding

Studies on chemical larvicides including insect growth regulators (IGR) have been carried out have shown that these methods are effective in controlling mosquito populations. Larviciding aims to reduce the number of mosquitoes that reach adulthood. This pesticides are applied to stagnant water such as shallow ponds, catch basins and other areas where mosquitoes can breed.

AedesTech Mosquito Home System (A-HMS)

AedesTech Mosquito Home System (A-HMS) uses natural ingredients to lure Aedes Mosquitoes into the A-HMS to lay eggs. 99% of eggs that are laid will not develop into larvae. IGR will disturb the pupae development so that they cannot reach adult stage thus disturbing adult mosquitoes breeding abilities.

MozzTech Mosquito Trap

This trap uses all of the proven mosquito attractants to draw the annoying and harmful insects away. It can eradicate mosquitoes and control deadly viral diseases carried by mosquitoes and other flying insects, without harmful insecticides and chemicals. MozzTech Mosquito Trap attracts mosquitoes like a magnet, using a combination of CO2, heat, vacuum and light to catch and kill mosquitoes.
