What are Booklice?

Booklice, also known as psocids or paperlice, are tiny insects belonging to the order Psocoptera. Despite their name, they are not actually lice and do not feed on blood. Instead, they are scavengers that primarily feed on mold, fungi, algae, and other organic matter found in humid environments.

Appearance

  • Size: Booklice are extremely small, typically ranging from 1 to 2 millimeters in length.
  • Color: They are usually pale or translucent, sometimes with a slight yellow or brown tint.
  • Body: Their bodies are soft and flattened, with long antennae and wings that are often absent or reduced.

Signs of Infestation

Visible Insects: Small, pale insects crawling on wall, books, paper, or cardboard boxes.

Do booklice bite?

No. Unlike true lice, they do not feed on blood.  They are not parasitic or vectors.

Habitat

  • Booklice are commonly found in warm, humid environments such as homes, libraries, warehouses, and food storage areas.
  • They are particularly attracted to damp or moldy conditions and are often found in basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and areas with poor ventilation.

Behavior

  • Nocturnal: Booklice are mostly active at night, though they may also be active during the day in low-light conditions.
  • Feeding: They feed on a variety of organic materials, including mold, fungi, grains, starches, and dead insects.

Prevention and Control

  • Reduce Humidity: Use dehumidifiers and proper ventilation to reduce humidity levels, especially in areas prone to dampness.
  • Proper Storage: Store books, papers, and other susceptible materials in dry, well-ventilated areas.
  • Regular Cleaning: Keep storage areas clean and free of food debris and mold.
  • Seal Entry Points: Seal cracks, crevices, and entry points to prevent booklice from entering buildings.
  • Pesticides: In severe infestations, insecticides labeled for indoor use may be applied, but non-chemical control methods are often sufficient.
