Houseflies are a Well-known Cosmopolitan Pest

The housefly, Musca domestica Linnaeus, is a well-known cosmopolitan pest that can be found in farms on in your home.

Features

  • Size: 4 to 7.5 mm long
  • Colour: Usually gray
  • Body: Four black stripes on their thorax and slightly hairy bodies
  • Eyes: Compound red eyes (contains thousands of individual lenses)
  • Female house flies are usually larger than males

Habitat

  • Feces
  • Rotting & spoiled food
  • Abundant during the warm seasons

Life Cycle

  • Complete metamorphosis: (egg, larval, pupal and adult)
  • Female house fly are capable of laying up to 150 eggs in a batch
  • Eggs – 1.2 mm in length, piled in small groups
  • Larval – Within a day, house fly eggs hatch into larvae, also known as maggots
  • Pupa – Completes their development in two to six days at 35 °C
  • Adult – Lives 15 to 25 days, some may live up to two months

Prevention Tips

  • Regularly remove trash
  • Use well-sealed garbage receptacles
  • Pet waste must be cleaned up immediately
