Keeping Termites At Bay
Termite damage accounts for up to a staggering US$22 billion per year globally. In Malaysia alone, about RM30 million is spent each year on termite control, and the cost of repair for termite damage is believed to hit RM150 million.
Termite damage may not be as sudden or as violent as damage from fire or storms, but the truth of the matter is, termites cause more damage than all fires, hurricanes and tornadoes combined. This is because termite damage is much more likely to occur. In fact, there are only two types of houses. Either your house is already infested with termites or it will – eventually. Which type is yours?
The damages of a termite-infested house are nothing to laugh at. Termites chew mercilessly – they chew at your kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, shelves and bookcases, leaving you appalled. Your roof is also not spared as these insidious little pests can cause your house to collapse completely and destroying it.
Don’t stinge on eliminating termites that have invaded your house as the consequences are far worse. Prevention is better than cure.
To effectively eliminate termites from causing damage to your house, it is important that you understand the biology and feeding behaviour of termites.
Subterranean termites, the most common kind that attack properties, live in the soil. They are social insects and, like ants, live in colonies which can contain up to two million members. These colonies consist of a network of tunnels and chambers built around a king and queen whose sole job is to reproduce.
Often the queen’s swollen body can weigh more than a pencil. The rest of the colony is made up of secondary reproductives, workers and soldiers that play specific roles in keeping the colony healthy.
Termites that are going to become queens are fed special chemicals and food by worker termites to make sure that they grow up with wings and the ability to mate and to lay eggs. Most of these termites, which are known as reproductives, fly off from the nests in large numbers during the wet part of the year. At this stage they all look very similar, whether they are males (kings) or females (queens) and none of them have swollen abdomens.
They fly away from the nest to begin a new colony in another place. If they are successful, they meet a mate and dig into the soil. Once there, they begin to form a new colony. When the king and queen are safely together in the nest, the queen begins to grow and produce eggs to start a new colony.
Some termite queens are very large (up to 3-4 inches in length and about an inch in diameter), and can lay a lot of eggs in a very short time. Certain species are known to lay an egg a second, and so could theoretically lay over 30 million eggs a year!
Worker termites are soft-bodied, wingless, blind and sterile individuals in the colony. They keep busy 24 hours a day digesting wood fibres and other forms of cellulose which they eat, digest and share with other members of the colony. They can even chew through lead, asphalt, plaster or mortar to find wood. They also clean the nest, construct tunnels, bury the dead and even clean the royal couple, the king and queen, and carry away the eggs. The worker caste is the most destructive of all the termite castes because of its behaviour of chewing and feeding on wood and cellulose-based materials.
Solder termites are involved in defence. They are wingless, blind and soft-bodied. Their heads are usually larger than the workers and are normally equipped with a pair of mandibles or jaws. They are unable to feed themselves and rely on worker termites to feed them.
Termites often infest buildings and damage wood panels, doorframes, window frames, wooden flooring, wallpaper, paper products and fabric made of plant fibres.
